How search engine optimisation saved the company...

Ken and Chris Harbour started their mother and baby website Poshmums.com about three years ago. Like any new business they needed the sales to build as quick as possible and as it is purely an online business pay per click or more particularly Google AdWords seemed the obviously way to go.

I worked with Ken showing him how to setup Google AdWords campaigns match the keywords to the products they were selling. And it worked incredibly well. Sales went from nothing to £6k/month and beyond.

The higher Ken set the AdWords spend the more the orders came in. They were completely focused on packing and dispatching the orders. But there was a problem. Being so focused on making the AdWords bring in the orders and then getting them out to the customers, they had failed to spot one important things: they weren't really making any money from the sales that came from the pay per click.

The problem was a simple one. To get sales from AdWords you need so many visitors to get one sale. They might need 20 visitors at a cost of 40p per click to get one sale. So that sale would cost £8. This is called a conversion.

The average conversion was costing £6, but the average margin left over for profit was also £6. So they weren't making any money. If fact they were losing money when the other costs were taken into account.

Something had to be done and fast. I visited Ken and went through my Simple SEO system with him. We start with the planning and looked at the products and then started to research and match keywords for them. This is exactly the same process you'll go through if you attend on of my Really Simple SEO Workshops.

Based on the plan we developed Ken worked through the whole site optimising it with the keywords guided by the Simple SEO System. And the results were startling.

Now over 60 per cent of all sales come from the organic (free) search results. The site consistently returns a first page listing for the main industry keywords such as 'breastfeeding pumps'. More importantly they are now very profitable and currently developing another web business.

Tim Evans at MAS Seeds has worked hard applying the Really Simple principles to the optimisation on his Meadowmania.co.uk website. His problem was not what keywords are available but which to choose from the many variations available.

This is where the conversion analysis lessons really made all the difference. Tim was able to focus not just on the keywords that the site was appearing well for, or even the ones he thought would be good; but was actually able to place a financial value to each keyword which represented what its potential revenue is to the business.

So how has he done this. Basically by using some of the tools in Google AdWords and Analytics to learn just what each keyword's monetary value is. Then using simple techniques show in the course he focuses on the most valuable keywords to drive the sales forward.
