It’s a very simple fact that the smallest of businesses, sole traders and folk just starting out in business can’t afford the cost of standard SEO services to help them promote their websites.
That’s because these services are expensive and generally out of the reach of the smaller business. Typically ongoing optimisation and marketing of a website will be anything from £250 to £600 a month and as with all these monthly services yoù have to keep going with them to obtain any real benefit.
Why is the cost so high? In simple terms it’s because getting your website’s pages ranked higher on Google is nothing like as easy as it used to be because there are no longer any quick-fire ways to success, everything takes a lot more time and need the input of someone with a reasonable level of skill and ability.
Over the past few years small business people have been asking for a more affordable service that stills delivers worthwhile results. That’s what prompted me to start the £50 a month Budget SEO Package.
So what have I learnt since starting the Budget SEO Package? First of all it is possible to deliver such a low cost service and still achieve good ranking improvements for those subscribed to it. But it has required a complete rethink of the traditional seo service and also a change to the expectations of the customers.
Traditional seo services is costly because it takes a lot of time. An SEO firm will spend a lot of time getting to know the client’s needs and requirements. The specialist needs to meet with the client in person or over Skype, review the site, identify the best options and develop a strategy going forward; as well as managing the resulting email and telephone correspondence. All this takes a lot of time and time is money.
So the only answer was to pare everything down until all that was left was the actual optimisation work itself. This meant taking out a lot of the features that normally come with this service such as consultation (either face to face or over Skype), telephone or email support and other things such as developing a detailed SEO plan.
Obviously these things are important but they are not essential to success and tend to be what make a SEO firm charge so much.
The next thing to consider was just what could we do in the very limited time available. As mentioned many of the typical techniques are just too time consuming so we have to focus on things that make the biggest difference with the least effort and the best way to do this is to focus on the on-page and meta tags and optimise a few pages a month.
The next thing to do was to encourage the website owner to do more things that help improve ranking such as creating pertinent content or developing backlinks from other websites. We helped with this further by including a short monthly action plan of things the website owner can do together with tutorials offering advice on completing the task.
But the main thing I learnt was the fact you can actually achieve so much even when you have very limited time and budget available. This is effectively what we do with the Budget SEO Package and the same principle applies if you want to optimise your website yourself as well.
